Situated along the iconic US-1, Pelican Lodge has stood for over fifty years, long before the rapid growth around it. As a tribute to the area's rich cultural past, our lodge offers a glimpse into old Florida charm. We take pride in preserving this history and our deep-rooted ties to the local community.
1970s: Founding Roots & Old Florida Charm
Opened in 1975 by a family as a modest fishing retreat, Pelican Lodge embraced its location opposite the Indian River Lagoon—a historic waterway once called the "River Ais" by indigenous tribes. The lodge catered to anglers and travelers seeking Old Florida’s tranquility, minutes from untouched beaches and the Grant Seafood Festival (est. 1966), a community cornerstone.
1980s: Space Coast Growth & Conservation Shifts
As NASA’s operations boomed, the lodge hosted engineers and families drawn to Brevard County. Nearby, Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge (est. 1903) expanded conservation efforts, inspiring local eco-awareness. Pelican Lodge added kitchenettes and river-view rooms, aligning with guests’ demand for simplicity amid regional development.
1990s: Resilience & Modernization
Amid rapid growth, Grant-Valkaria’s rural identity faced pressure. The lodge renovated its units, installing air conditioning and modern amenities while preserving its retro facade. Valkaria Airport’s rise (1990s) boosted tourism, positioning the lodge as a wallet-friendly base for pilots and nature enthusiasts exploring the lagoon.
2000s: Community Legacy & Renewal
Grant-Valkaria incorporated in 2006 to protect its heritage, echoing Pelican Lodge’s commitment to affordable, no-frills stays. Post-2004 hurricanes, the lodge upgraded infrastructure and launched weekly rates, supporting long-term residents. The Indian River Lagoon’s ecological decline spurred local partnerships for water-quality initiatives.
2010s: Corporate Chapter, then Back to the Locals
After decades of local ownership, Pelican Lodge entered a brief corporate chapter from 2015 to 2022. By the end of the decade, the path was cleared for a return to local stewardship. During this period of rapid regional growth, companies such as L3Harris, Lockheed Martin, and others regularly housed their employees at Pelican Lodge for extended stays.
2020s: Celebrating 50 Years of Serenity
In 2022 we acquired Pelican Lodge, making us the third owners. We are proud to be family-owned local Floridians, a true triumph for the community. Our 2022 renovation introduced fresh, modern rooms, free Wi-Fi, 24-hour security, and pet-friendly policies—all made possible by your loyal support. Native landscaping and Riverview picnic areas showcase our sustainability commitment, even as we champion the lagoon’s revival against ecological challenges. As Brevard’s population grows, we remain your affordable oasis of simplicity. Future partnerships will deepen our ties to the Indian River’s renewal. We live, work, and love Florida—and invite you to share this paradise with us!
